Saying good-bye and Eating Clean

Hey everyone!
Yesterday was a bitter-sweet day. It was Phyllis' last day in the U.S. So we took her to downtown Houston. The first half of the day was exciting because we got to walk through the city and we actually got to go up the tallest building to get an aerial view of Houston. It was beautiful! After that, we had vegetarian burgers for lunch made by my sweet mom. :) We had lunch at a small Starbucks in one of the buildings. It's kind of funny because we were all dressed in casual clothing and everyone else was walking around in their business suits, skirts, dresses and high heels. Phyllis was nervous that she might end up getting lost in the airport and miss her flight. But we just kept telling her that it was going to run smoothly and we would stay with her until she knew where to go. Once she was ready to go through security and we had to leave, it was time to say our good-byes. My mom and I cried and so did Phyllis. :( It was a very heartbreaking moment but it made me realize the wonderful friendship that had flourished during the last two weeks. I am so thankful to God for the friendships he has placed in my life all over the world.
Anyway, the rest of the day felt so lonely without Phyllis. I just kept going back to memorable moments we had together. I hope I get to see her again soon. :)
Now on a less serious note, I'm reading through one of Tosca Reno's books. If you get the chance to read any of her books, you should read them! They are very motivating and she has great, clean recipes. Anyway, I started eating clean when I was a freshman in high school but recently I've kind of fallen off track. So I printed a copy of the eating clean principles in order to get me started. Tomorrow I would like to make some of her recipes, if not, maybe start picking out some recipes for next week. I want to start now before the school year begins. I also want to clarify that this is not a diet, it is a lifestyle and that goes for me too. Sometimes you just need a little push especially when you have cupcakes and cookies staring at you at a party or grocery store. Nutrition is definitely key in the way your body looks and feels. 80% nutrition, 10% training, 10% genetics.

Home made banana bread!

Rest Day

Thank goodness it's Friday!
Today is my rest day. I took the day off of running and I am now doing active rest which includes walking, biking, gardening or whatever light activity you can think of. My bike is broken right now so I am walking a lot. I went to the grocery store with my mom and in about an hour we will head out to the 360 bridge so my friend can get some good pictures of the iconic bridge. I can never get enough of the hills and the landscape in Westlake. Right now i made my mom's signature banana bread! Let me emphasize that it is THE BEST BANANA BREAD! I will post a picture soon. Later we will have dinner and go to auditorium shores and let Phyllis try the famous Sno Beach snow cones! Then we will head out to the underground bowling place to go bowling, obviously. So it will be quite a fun day in this 100 degree weather. :) Hope all of you are enjoying your Friday as well!

Workout and Fredericksburg

Happy Thursday!
Today I managed to get up at 6:45 to sneak in a 30 minute run. I'm trying to workout early in the morning when the weather is cool and the birds are beginning to chirp. It is so soothing. I knew we would be leaving for Fredericksburg early so I decided to get up early and workout. After my run I took my dog Precious for a walk (she doesn't run very much so I don't take her running often. She always stops to smell the flowers). After walking I did the following abdominal exercises:
20 crunches
20 reverse crunches
20 scissor crosses
(3 sets)

Standing Side Crunches: 15 on each side.

I'm trying to work my way up to some rock-hard abs.

My post-workout breakfast consisted of 1/2 cup of oatmeal, 1/2 cup of blueberries. For protein I had scrambled eggs with mushrooms. Yum!! Once I figure out how to post pictures on my blog I will post what I eat.

Our day trip involved visiting President Lyndon B. Johnson's ranch and taking a walk around the town of Fredricksburg. My family and I had already been there back in December but since Phyllis is visiting us from Germany we decided it would be great for her to see one of the most historic parks of Texas. She really liked Fredricksburg because of its German influences. She was able to translate some of the signs for us since we've never really known what they mean except maybe "willkommen". I don't even know if that's spelled right.
At the very end of our walk we decided to stop by and get some ice cream. I was debating whether I should get some or not since I'm trying to reduce sweets. But I just couldn't resist, so I got dutch chocolate with coffee ice cream. It turned out to be a lot so I shared with my sister, cousin, dad and mom. Good thing I ran this morning. But for now, no more ice cream!! That's enough!! So thankful for sunny days. Even if it's hot, I'm glad I can get some Vitamin D! ;) I'm ready to recharge. Hope you guys had a great Thursday too!

Running with Phyllis

Today I had a tough workout. My friend (Phyllis) from Germany is visiting for two weeks and she does running competitions all the time. So today we decided to go for a morning run at the track near my house and she showed me a speed work workout. Man, that girl is fast! I really need a pair of long legs. She doesn't even look like she's trying. But anyway, we did 3x200 and 3x100 and our warm up was 3 laps and our cool down was 2 laps. Usually she does 3 to 4 laps for warm ups and cool downs but she is not used to the Texas heat so we took it down a notch. But today's workout definitely served as motivation to start running consistently and faster. I felt amazing afterwards. I'm so thankful that I can move and run even if I'm not super fast. When we got home, there were warm pancakes waiting at the table made by my lovely mother! Perfect post-workout meal. :)
